Badgers head to Boston this weekend
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women's rowing team hits the road again this weekend for their second fall race to take on some of the most competitive rowers in the nation on Sunday, Oct. 20 at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.
Part of the Wisconsin women's rowing team will also be heading to Notre Dame this weekend for a Saturday scrimmage.
1. LAST TIME OUT: UW tested the waters at the Milwaukee River Challenge earlier this fall where Wisconsin won their first race of the season by the freshman lineup in the open eight.
The two other open eight UW boats took second and fourth, while all five boats in the open four were just shy of stealing first from Lincoln Park Boat Club, taking second instead and filing in one after another.
2. ABOUT THE CHARLES: The Badgers return for the first time to the Head of the Charles regatta since 2016 where they took ninth overall.
Wisconsin has competed in the women's collegiate eights in Boston since 1974, holding four titles.
The event takes place on the penultimate complete weekend of October each year on the Charles River which separates Boston and Cambridge, Mass. The race is one of the world's best and most competitive rowing events.
3. HOW TO FOLLOW THE RACES: Live stream, results, races and information can be found on https://www.hocr.org/. The Head of the Charles also has an official feature app for the weekend, titled "HOCR," that can be downloaded on the app store.
4. SUMMER ON THE WATER: Several Badgers participated in crew competitions across the country and internationally over the summer.
Former Wisconsin rower and Franklin native Sophia Vitas made her second national team appearance at the 2019 World Rowing Championships in Linz-Ottensheim, Austria in late August. She raced with Team USA's women's quadruple sculls to earn a seventh-place finish and the boat a ticket to the main qualification regatta for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Former rowers Victoria Opitz (Middleton) and Maddie Wanamaker (Neenah) also raced together in the women's four at the world championships. Despite taking sixth in their final, Opitz and Wanamaker helped their boat qualify for Tokyo as well.
Senior Grace Joyce raced in international competition at the 2019 World Rowing Under-23 Championships in Sarasota, Fla. in July. As part of Team USA's women's lightweight double sculls, Joyce helped her boat take sixth in the A finals.
Seniors Lauren O'Connor (Belleville) and Rebekah Armstrong (Washington D.C.) competed in the under 23 women's double sculls trails just missing the finals. O'Connor taking third in the second heat and second in the repechage, and Armstrong placing fourth in the second heat and then third in her repechage.
Up Next: The Badgers host a border-battle Saturday, Nov. 2 on Lake Mendota with rival Minnesota.
