UW openweights kick off 2018 season at Cardinal Invite

“If we show up, it means we’re ready to race.”
MADISON, Wis. -- After a successful fall season and months of winter training, the Wisconsin women's rowing team opens the spring racing season this weekend, March 17-18, at the Cardinal Invite in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
Wisconsin will race against crews from Yale, Tulsa and Tennessee, as well as a few Big Ten Conference opponents in Minnesota, Michigan and Michigan State, among others.
"It's going to be a really good opportunity for us to get on the water and get right into racing," head coach Bebe Bryans said. "It's sort of conventional wisdom that you should actually practice before you race, but we really feel that we've been practicing for racing. It's just a good opportunity to get this season started and then come home for a couple of days before we go back down to spring break and really take what we learned from this weekend and start working on it."
The Cardinal Invite will not have points to earn or an official champion, but "results always matter. We always want to win," Bryans said.
"That being said, our racing schedule this year is such that we're meeting a lot of these teams again and it's really your body of work that ends up at the Big Ten Championships. I think everybody knows we haven't been on the water yet, but most people don't care.
"If we show up, it means we're ready to race."
