Carlson, Pinfold lead way for Wisconsin as consolation finalists
INDIANAPOLIS — Three members of the Wisconsin swimming program looked plenty comfortable Thursday in events that don't always show up on a meet program.
Sprints were on display on the third day of the USA Swimming National Championships in the backstroke and breaststroke, strokes that are not contested at 50-meter lengths in the Olympic Games but will be at next month's world championships in Hungary.
The Badgers scored finalists in three of the four sprint races, with senior Maria Carlson racing to a 16th-place finish in the women's 50-meter breaststroke (32.09 seconds), senior Brett Pinfold taking 16th in the men's 50 backstroke (25.92) and freshman Beata Nelson grabbing 23rd in the women's 50 back (29.56).
The championships continue Friday, with preliminary rounds set for 8 a.m. (CT) and the finals to follow at 5 p.m. Universal HD will air the finals session live from 5-7 p.m., with a live stream also available via the NBC Sports app.
