Badger Development Camp show their skills at the 2016 USRowing Club Nationals
MADISON, Wis.-- A trio of boats from the Badger Development Camp, a five-week development camp made up of mostly Wisconsin rowers but open to all college-aged athletes, won gold medals at the 2016 USRowing Club National Championships. The competition took place between July 13-17 at Harsha Lake in Cincinnati, Ohio and included teams from all across the country.
In the Women's Intermediate Eight Grand Final, the Badger Development Camp boat, coxed by Badger rower Gabby Simons, blew away the competition, finishing over four seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
In the Women's Intermediate 2 Grand Final, the boats from camp really showed their prowess, finishing with a clean sweep in first, second and third out of 23 entries. The pair of Gabby Simons and Andrea French finished first, beating out Chase Shepley, who attends Stanford, and UW rower Sarah Gibbons for second. Renee Olley and Katie Ruffallo finished third in the race.
The final victorious boat came in the Women's Elite/Senior 4 Grand Final with the Badger boat finishing in just over seven minutes. The Bader Development Camp B boat finished fourth in the race.
"It was a great week, with the team performing very well. We had a decent size group stay in Madison this summer to train and this was a nice way to cap off the summer and get ready for fall. Club Nationals has really grown especially on the junior level and it's a good opportunity to watch high school athletes race and to meet them at the College Fair at the end of the regatta," assistant lightweight coach Todd Vogt said.
Other strong finishers from the camp included the boat that finished third in the Women's Intermediate Lightweight Quadruple Sculls Grand Final, as well as the boat that finished fourth in the Women's Intermediate Lightweight Grand Final, which was comprised of Amanda Aiello and Shannon Lipe.
"The focus of the Badger Development Camp this summer was to spend a lot of time rowing straight pairs to develop skill level as well as spend time rowing in boats different than what they row during the collegiate season, USRowing Club Nationals was a perfect championship regatta to put those skills into racing scenarios against other good club programs," freshman coach Jim Mitchell said. "It was a successful regatta for us because we raced well, represented our program well and had a lot of fun."
