Captain’s three-point weekend slots him at Big Ten’s second star of the week
MADISON, Wis. – For the second time this season, sophomore Luke Kunin has been recognized as the Big Ten's second star of the week, after producing three points in a series split at Michigan.
The last time Kunin received the second star was on Nov. 1 for his five-point weekend against Clarkson and St. Lawrence.
Kunin, a native of Chesterfield, Missouri, scored two goals in Friday night's 7-4 victory over Michigan and contributed an assist in the Badgers' 4-1 loss to the Wolverines on Saturday.
The two-goal weekend for Kunin extended his lead for most goals on the team with 11, three ahead of teammate Grant Besse. Kunin scored the third goal for UW on Friday night, which briefly gave the team a 3-2 lead. He then scored the game-winning goal about seven minutes later to give Wisconsin a 4-3 lead, a lead it would never surrender.
The captain also assisted on Grant Besse's power-play goal on Saturday night, which brought the Badgers to within one goal in the second period.
Although the Badgers will be on finals and holiday break, Kunin will not have time to relax as he has been selected to Team USA's 27-man preliminary roster for the upcoming World Junior Championship in Toronto and Montreal from Dec. 26-Jan. 5. Should he make the final roster, the United States' first game will be Dec. 26 against Latvia in Toronto.
A pair of Gophers sandwiched Kunin on the awards list this week, as senior forward Justin Kloos was given the first star while Tyler Sheehy was named the third star.
Wisconsin has had three other players on the weekly awards list this season, including most recently Besse. Trent Frederic and Corbin McGuire have also earned honors.
The Badgers will have about a month off for finals and winter break before returning to the Kohl Center for the first home conference series of the year as UW will take on Michigan State on Jan. 6-7. Friday's game will start at 8 p.m. CT and will be televised on BTN and available on the radio on WIBA-AM 1310. Saturday's matchup will begin at 7 p.m. CT and will also be aired on BTN and WIBA-AM 1310.
