Senior Chase Kinney recognized for claiming four wins in dual vs. Minnesota
MADISON, Wis. — Chase Kinney's 4-for-4 performance and Justin Temprano's first career win earned the Wisconsin duo a pair of honors from the Big Ten Conference on Wednesday.
Kinney was named Big Ten Women's Swimmer of the Week after claiming four event wins in Wisconsin's team triumph over Border Battle rival Minnesota last Thursday. Temprano, competing in just his second collegiate meet, earned Big Ten Men's Freshman of the Week honors for scoring a pair of top-two finishes against the Gophers.
Kinney, a senior from Canton, Ohio, swept the sprint freestyle races in the dual with Minnesota by winning the 50-yard freestyle in 22.62 seconds and claiming the top spot in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.58, earning NCAA championships "B" cuts in both events. She also helped the Badgers sweep both relays, leading off UW's winning effort in the 400 freestyle relay (3:19.98) and then anchoring Wisconsin to a win in the 200 medley relay (1:40.42).
Kinney's time of 22.62 leads the Big Ten and ranks her No. 3 nationally in the 50 free, and she also ranks in a tie for No. 7 nationally in the 100 free. The Badgers rank third in the 400 free relay and stand at No. 8 in the 200 medley relay.
Temprano, a freshman from Madison, claimed the first win of his college career by finishing first in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:49.84. He also was second in the 100 back in 51.08 and contributed to the Badgers' fifth-place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:34.08).
Temprano ranks No. 6 among Big Ten swimmers in the 200 back.
After opening with Auburn and then taking on rival Minnesota, the Badgers conclude a difficult three-week stretch to open the season when they travel to NC State for a dual meet this Friday and Saturday in Raleigh, North Carolina.
