MADISON, Wis. – Against the top teams in the country at the 2016 Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational Presented by Under Armour on Friday, the Wisconsin women's cross country team held its own, finishing 21st at its second home meet of the year.

Senior Michele Lee and freshman Amy Davis led the Badgers during the beautiful fall day at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course as the duo each finished in the top-75 in the field that featured 17 of the top 30 teams in the country in the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Coaches' Poll.

"Every point counts in this race," Lee said. "I wanted to get as many girls as I could in those last few meters.

"Having Amy there just makes it so much easier because we work out together and we are really close. It's just so much more fun and makes it so much easier."

Lee and Davis, both Wisconsin natives, ran together for the majority of the race. But Lee was able to separate herself on the final straightaway to finish 64th in 21:05.0. Davis clocked in at 21:06.7 to secure a 72nd-place finish.

True freshman Alicia Monson had a tremendous day, finishing third for the Badgers and 77th overall in 21:13.1. Monson crushed her time from the Badger Classic, earning a personal record by nearly 50 seconds.

Senior Sarah Heinemann and freshman Emma Langer capped off the scoring for Wisconsin, placing 123rd and 137th for a total of 473 team points.

"It certainly wasn't our best day," assistant coach Jill Miller said. "But we can grow so much in two weeks from this experience, and from adding bodies back to the mix. We did some things well and some things poorly, but we just need to learn from this and apply them in two weeks."

For the second-straight year, a Boise State Bronco was the top individual. This year it was sophomore Brenna Peloquin, winning in 20 minutes, 0.8 seconds. Junior Alice Wright from New Mexico and sophomore Anna Rohrer from Notre Dame finished second and third in 20:01.9 and 20:03.4, respectively.

It was a tight race at the top of the team standings. Washington, who entered the meet ranked fourth, ran away with the team title scoring 124 points. The Huskies were led by fourth-place finisher Amy-Eloise Neale and Charlotte Prouse who clocked in fifth.

No. 3 North Carolina State grabbed 166 points to finish second, edging out No. 1 Providence who finished third with 170 points.

Postseason competition starts for Wisconsin at the end of the month as the Badgers head to Minneapolis for the 2016 Big Ten Cross Country Championship on October 30th. The women's six-kilometer race is at 10 a.m. with the men's eight-kilometer race to follow at 11 a.m. as both races will be shown live on BTN.
