MADISON, Wis. --- A pair of Wisconsin women's openweight rowers and five Badger women's lightweight rowers have been recognized by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) as scholar athletes for the 2014-15 season.
In order to receive such an honor, the student must boast at least a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average, while also being at least a second-year student who rowed in 75 percent of spring races or raced in a conference event.
The list includes some of the best and brightest for the Badgers.
Senior openweights Kristine Kammers (Waukesha, Wisconsin) and Elizabeth Schoenfeldt (Milwaukee) both earned recognition for the second time in their careers.
Kammers was a 2015 All-Big Ten rower who is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree as an accounting major. She rowed the 2015 season as part of UW's varsity eight, which included a 13th-place finish at the NCAA championships, a fourth-place result at the Big Ten championships and a Big Ten Boat of the Week honor.
Schoenfeldt is also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten rower who served the Badgers as one of their captains in 2014. The program's Athletic Board Scholar in 2014 spent most of her time in the second varsity eight, helping the boat take ninth place at the 2015 NCAA Rowing Championships last week. She is a biochemistry major.
Seniors Alessandra Ruenger (Brookline, Massachusetts), Gretchen Miron (Appleton, Wisconsin) Brianna Murphy (Platteville, Wisconsin), Katie Rosoff (Newport Beach, California), as well as junior Helena Randle (Brookline, Massachusetts), were honored from the Wisconsin women's lightweight program.
Ruenger, Murphy and Randle are all biology majors, while Miron is a double major in journalism and history and Rosoff is a double major in legal studies and political science. All five have rowed in the UW varsity lightweight eight at some point during the season, including all five at the 2015 Eastern Sprints, where the boat took fourth. Murphy coxed the team's eight at the 2015 Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships, with Miron, Randle and Rosoff rowing, and placed fifth.
Murphy is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, while Randle, Rosoff, Ruenger and Miron were each awarded the honor twice in their UW careers to this point.
