Junior finishes third in A Final of 500-yard freestyle
AUSTIN, Texas – In the first full day of competition at the Texas Invitational, the Wisconsin men's and women's swim teams displayed some speed during Thursday night's finals session in Austin, Texas, led by junior Chase Kinney claiming the 50-yard freestyle title in impressive fashion.
Kinney began the day with a third-place preliminary time of 22.30 seconds, which broke her previous personal record of 22.42 seconds set at last year's Big Ten championship. She didn't stop there. The Canton, Ohio, native then lowered the mark even further later in the evening to win the A Final and claim the event title in 22.23 seconds.
Freshman Jess Unicomb followed suit and finished sixth in the A Final of the sprint freestyle event, clocking in a 22.47 seconds.Â
For the men, Matt Hutchins shaved nearly two seconds off of his preliminary time to notch a third-place finish in the men's A Final. Hutchins' time of 4:15.64 was just under two seconds off of his personal best and winning time from last year's Big Ten Championship.Â
The Badgers placed two women in the A Final of the 500-yard freestyle, as Danielle Valley led the way with a third-place finish and a time of 4:41.25. Jenny Holtzen was eighth, as the senior clocked in at 4:52.14.Â
The pair of Anna Meinholz and Brett Pinfold streamlined the Badgers in the women's and men's 200-yard individual medley. Meinholz grabbed an eighth-place finish with a time of 2:01.26, while Pinfold was sixth in the men's race, as he clocked in at 1:46.40.Â
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Kinney, Unicomb, Annie Tamblyn, and Marissa Berg finished fourth in the women's race, as the Wisconsin 'A' relay touched the wall at 1:30.12.Â
The men's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Clifton, Pinfold, Ryan Stack, and Ryan Barsanti clocked in at 1:20.77, which was good for a sixth-place finish.Â
Closing out the night, the women's 400-yard medley relay team of Unicomb, Meinholz, Dana Grindall, and Kinney finished fifth in a time of 3:35.85, while the men's team of Austin Byrd, Jake Mandli, Harrison Tran, and Clifton was sixth in a time of 3:13.41.
