MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- It was a multitude of dominant individual performances and record-breaking performances that led the way for the Wisconsin men's and women's swimming and diving teams as they competed in a dual meet against Milwaukee Friday afternoon.
Aside from the 11 pool records that were broken on Friday at the Klotsche Natatorium, a total of 16 different individual swimmers and divers earned top finishes for the Badgers, along with four relay victories.
The men's team trumped Milwaukee 143-92, while the women defeated the Panthers 139-93.
"There are always new ways for me to challenge the team," UW head coach Whitney Hite said. "We wanted them to be sharp today, and it’s always nice to leave a pool with some pool records and go home with two wins."
Leading the way for the men were Nick Caldwell, Nicholas Schafer and Josh Anderson, all breaking pool records in their respective events. Caldwell, a junior, won the 200-yard freestyle (1:39.35), while fellow junior Nicholas Schafer finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke (55.79). Anderson, a sophomore, also set a new pool record while earning the top spot in the 400-yard IM (4:02.19).

The men's squad swept its two relay events, garnering victories in the 200-yard medley (1:31.63) and 200-yard freestyle (1:24.26) relay races. The 200-yard medley 'B' squad relay quartet of O'Donnell, Ryan Barsanti, Jake Mandli and Harrison Tran also finished in second behind the 'A' squad with a time of 1:34.29.
On the women's side, Wisconsin was led by junior Ivy Martin, who finished with two record-setting performances. The Madison, Wis. native won the 100-yard butterfly (54.73) as well as setting a record during the 50-yard freestyle (22.61) in her leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:32.15) victory, also a pool record.

The women's relay quartet of Annie Tamblyn, Anna Meinholz, R.Palm and Martin also broke a pool record in the 200-yard medley relay, winning with a time of 1:41.33. Madison, Wis., native Aja Van Hout rounded out the women's top performances with a first-place spot in the 50-yard freestyle (23.95).
In the diving well, freshmen Ashley Peterson and Andrew Suchla snagged three top-finishes on the day. Peterson, a native of Highlands Ranch, Colo., won both the 1-meter (273.37) and 3-meter (287.92) events. Suchla, a Racine, Wis. native, won by a large margin on the 1-meter board with a score of 368.62.
"We still have a week and a half for the women and two and a half weeks for the men until Big Ten," Hite said. "I feel very good about where we are physically and mentally, and tomorrow is another opportunity to keep sharpening up."
"We’ve come a long way, and we’ve got a long way to go. But we’re moving in the right direction."
The Badgers return to competition on Saturday, Feb. 8 as they travel to take on in-state rival Green Bay in their last dual meet of the season. Competition begins at 11 a.m. C.T.
