MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women’s openweight and lightweight rowing programs are coming off of an intense weekend at Head of the Charles and will get right back on the water for a scrimmage this weekend against Minnesota and Indiana.
Sophomore openweight, Dani Steinberg, shared what has been going on since last weekend’s race, “In the week since HOCR, we've been working more on focusing in on the boat and moving together. Matching the girl in front of you so that as a boat we can get faster.”
The Mendota Challenge will be held on Saturday and Sunday on Lake Mendota, here in Madison. Races scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday. The boats included in Saturday’s events are the top two varsity eights as well as the top two varsity fours. Also competing on Saturday are the top three novice boats. There is a mixture of openweight and lightweight boats from Wisconsin, Indiana and Minnesota in these events.
Steinberg added, “In the Mendota Challenge, I'm looking to take some really good strokes and help make sure my boat is ahead of Indiana and Minnesota's.”
Things pick back up bright and early on Sunday at Porter Boathouse. At 9:00 racing starts for the “A” and “B” coxed fours along with the 3V8 and top two novice boats.
Races will run in flights, starting with the varsity eights. They will start one behind the other on the course, running in both directions. Each piece will either be 5 x 5 minutes or 1500 meters and will have a rate cap. The scrimmage will not be scored in any way, but finishes of each boat will be recorded after each piece.
A member of the lightweight squad, Brianna Murphy, talked about what it’s like to be on Lake Mendota, “Being able to compete in Madison this weekend will be a great chance to see what our crew as a whole, both novices and varsity, can do. Our team is really close this year, so getting to have everyone out there racing together will provide an extra element that is sure to translate into speed. For me personally, it means getting to show family and friends what I spend so many hours every week doing.”
Murphy added, "A large number of our team is from the East Coast, so we always have good support even when we make our trips out there, but it'll be exciting to be on our own lake, especially with campus being a sea of red for homecoming."
Both Saturday and Sunday’s forecast shows temperatures in the sixties with less than 15 mile per hour winds, which is nice racing conditions for late October. However, if winds pick up the racing will start at Marshall Park.
