
Badger pair earn spots on U.S. national team

MADISON, Wis. -- Two Badger rowers earned a berth on the U.S. national team after competing at the USRowing Under 23 World Championships Trials Wednesday at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. All three of Wisconsin's boats in competition advanced to the finals and finished in the top three.
Samuel Hoidal and Christopher Stiles won the final of the men's pair with a time of 6:50.14. They won the 2000 meter race by 3.3 seconds, beating an unaffiliated pair and a boat from Penn.
With the first place finish, Hoidal and Stiles earn a chance to represent the United States at the 2011 World Rowing Under 23 Championships, July 21-24, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Lowell McNicholas and Andrew Weiland finished second in the lightweight men's pair finals with a time of 6:44.50.
On the women's side, Wisconsin's boat finished third in 7:01.06 in the finals of the women's four race. The race was won by the U-23 Women's Selection Camp "A" boat in 6:42.42. Monica Whitehouse, Kate Mansfield, Vanessa Kleiss and Jacquelyn Koykkar rowed for Wisconsin.
