
Thompson caps final day at sectional with win

MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin swimming and diving teams wrapped up competition at the USA Swimming Central Zone Speedo Champions Series on Saturday night. The four-day event at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis took place in a long-course pool, as compared to the short-course setup featured during the collegiate season.
The team's best showing came in the 50-meter freestyle as the Badgers had three of the top eight times.
Beckie Thompson and Ruby Martin came in first and second, while junior Maggie Meyer was fifth. Thompson, a sophomore, grabbed the title in a time of 25.95, while Martin, a freshman was right behind her at 26.60. Meyer finished in 26.52.
Danielle Beckwith added another solid performance as she grabbed the No. 2 spot in the 1500 freestyle. The sophomore completed the grueling race in 16:56.73.
In the first event of the evening, sophomore Ashley Wanland captured third place in the 200-meter IM, finishing in 2:24.37.
Competing for the men's program, freshman Sam Rowan earned fifth place in the 200 IM. He was done in a time of 2:10.29.
