post-game quotes

Wisconsin head coach Mike Eaves

On what made the difference in the game: The first 10 minutes...we didn't have a great start. I don't know, but for whatever reason we were flat, but we picked it up in the last 10 minutes and got things going. I felt that we truly did not give up a lot against that team. We played without the puck and every time we made a mistake we found the puck in our net. We didn't capitalize on our opportunities. I think that during the game we had a lot of good chances.

On the energy level: The first 10 minutes were disappointing but I thought we picked it up. I thought that the second period we were battling and we were getting chances. We were doing things that we needed to do. We didn't get rewarded for our efforts so it became a mental challenge to stay with it. Overall after the first 10 (minutes) I thought we were decent but it was disappointing to be here in this tight knit game. It was hard to try to explain how we didn't come out and have a great start.

On SCSU's second goal: It took the crowd out of it right away. They were into it and it hurt. It was one of our errors that cost us a goal. I thought that we responded previously because we had some scoring chances and we were putting pressure on and trying to get that second goal. We made a mistake in the defensive zone coverage and boom it was in the back of the net and just the mistakes that we made were huge and cost us tonight.

Wisconsin player quotes

Wisconsin forward Ben Street

On the first 10 minutes: "It was kind of a weird start. There was a penalty early and Jordy (Murray) got caught out in a long shift. We really didn't get a good start. Usually we try to in the first 10 minutes only a few players played. They were on the penalty kill so no one really got into the flow and it was pretty stagnant on our bench too. We just really never got into it until halfway through the first.

On the game overall: "Other than the first 10 minutes I thought that we played very well. We made a few mistakes and they capitalized. They are an opportunistic team and they made the most of their opportunities. I'm sure like Coach was saying to us in the locker room that when we go back and watch the video...we probably out chanced them tonight and we didn't capitalize on our chances. You have to give it to their players and their goalie and their team. They did a good job on their chances. It's just frustrating. We knew there was a lot at stake."

Wisconsin forward Derek Stepan

On the game overall: "Like Ben was saying, when we are flowing on the bench and we get four lines going, that's when we play our best. St. Cloud had four goals from four different lines. That's the way you need to get jobs done and especially on the road. That's a big win for them, but the good thing about WCHA is that we get another game tomorrow night so we're going to look forward to getting ourselves prepared to play another one."

On his goal: "Any time you score a goal no matter who it is you are going to jump quite a bit and get the crowd into it....It was very good to get the monkey off the back, that's for sure. I wish that we could have gotten the monkey off the back and gotten the win at the same time."

Wisconsin goaltender Scott Gudmandson

On SCSU's second goal: "I was just talking to Streeter (Ben Street) about that outside and I don't think that I would have done anything differently. If I didn't go out and play that puck, he would have been on a clear-cut breakaway. It was a gamble but he had a clear lane I think one of our defenders was pushing him from behind and he got the puck out of the air and made a good play. If I were to do it again I probably would have gone out and tried to fire that.
