Coach Eaves Quotes
On amount of penalties: “They had twelve penalties; we only had five. So it was a rough game that way. The referees were very busy.”
On the Mavericks’ physicality: “We expected that. It was physical, but we were getting shots on net. We had a lot of chances when it was five-on-five, but we just couldn’t finish. We joked in the locker room that it seemed like we were all speed and no finish because of all the chances we had. We were getting shots on the net; we had lots of scoring opportunities. It took us a while to get used to the pressure they were putting on us, but once we did get used to it we scored some goals.”
On Wisconsin’s effectiveness on the power play: “We were not very good. We were actually losing energy on the power play. Then we seemed to find the on switch and adjusted to what they were doing. The pressure. Basically they were saying if you’re going to beat us, you’re going to have to make three or four real good passes, and we didn’t have that very well early. As we got more reps we were able to do some things with it.”
On Gudmandson: “He gave us some big saves, some really big saves. I think on their second goal, he maybe shouldn’t have tried to poke-check and try to make that play there, but he made some really good saves when we needed them.”
On the Mavericks’ pressure: “It didn’t take us out of our rhythm as much as we lost energy. We have talked in the past about power plays; even if you don’t score, if you have puck control you create chances and it creates energy. Because of our ineffectiveness in the beginning on the power play we were losing energy on that.”
On the last-minute penalty shot: “Listening to the linesmen and referees after the game, there were some differences of opinion there. The way I understand it is if you take the puck from the crease and push it out, that’s not a penalty shot, but if you pick it up and throw it out of the crease, that is a penalty shot. So that’s what the discussion was about after the game. We will be definitely making a call here. Ryan clearly did not pick up the puck; he pushed it out of the crease.”
Player Quotes
Michael Davies
On his two power-play goals: “We couldn’t score on the power play. We were getting our chances, even on five-on-five. We knew we would end up getting one if we just stayed persistent, and I was able to tuck two in.”
On mind versus instinct: “I hope my mind is working, but I’m just reacting to everything, Just being around the front of the net got us a lot of success tonight.”
Blake Geoffrion
On the Maverick pressure: “They did a pretty good job pressuring. The puck was on the boards a lot. We couldn’t get it off the boards and get control of it. They did a good job on the battles. Once we got the puck off the wall, and got set up in the zone we did pretty well and started getting chances.”
Aaron Bendickson
On what gives Wisconsin the most success: “Just getting up ice and putting pressure on the other teams. Knowing what we are supposed to do and knowing what other teams are going to do. It comes down to just moving our feet and out working the other team. That’s what gets us the most success.”
