MADISON, Wis. – Senior Maggie Meyer received her second Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honor this season Tuesday after earning automatic spots for the NCAA Championships in two events at the Texas Invitational.
After eight weeks of competition, Meyer is the only female swimmer in the Big Ten Conference to earn the weekly honor more than once this season.
Meyer finished the three-day meet with three NCAA ‘A’ qualifying times, with one coming in 100-yard backstroke and two coming in the 200-yard backstroke events. She also picked up 10 NCAA ‘B’ qualifying times on the weekend.
The White Bear Lake, Minn., native set the school record in the 200-yard backstroke twice on the final day of competition, first finishing with a time of 1:54.39 in the preliminaries. She then shaved three seconds off of that time in the finals, winning the event in 1:51.39, the fastest time in the country this year.
Although Meyer won the 100-yard backstroke event as well (52.39), she broke the school record in the event while leading the Badgers to a third-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay as the lead off with her time of 51.66.
Meyer has now been named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week seven times in her career, the most of any Wisconsin swimmer.
The Badgers are off for the rest of 2010, but return to action for a dual meet during their annual training trip to Hawaii on Jan. 8.
