MADISON, Wis. -- Strong showings in Wisconsin’s season-opening meet have earned junior swimmer Maggie Meyer and junior diver Caleb Percevecz the year’s first Big Ten Conference weekly honors, the league announced Tuesday.
After opening the season with three event titles last Friday, Meyer has been named Big Ten Women’s Swimmer of the Week. The junior’s wins helped propel the Badgers over in-state rival Milwaukee in the teams’ season-opening dual meet.
A member of the U.S. national team, Meyer clocked an NCAA championships qualifying mark of 55.60 to win the 100-yard backstroke and then claimed the 200 individual medley in 2:08.72.
The North Oaks, Minn., native also led off the Badgers' winning entry in the 200 medley relay, clocking a 25.90 split for her 50-yard backstroke leg. This marks the second weekly swimming honor of Meyer’s career.
Percevecz, who earned Big Ten Men’s Diver of the Week honors for the fourth time in his career, easily swept the diving events as the UW men’s team opened its season with a 177.5-64.5 win over Milwaukee on Friday.
On the 3-meter board, Percevecz scored 381.08 points to shatter Wisconsin’s 28-year-old school record in the event. He also claimed the top spot in the 1-meter competition with a score of 331.50.
With his 3-meter performance, the Scottsdale, Ariz., native completed his sweep of the Badgers' dual-meet records in both springboard events. He already owned UW’s championship records in all three diving events.
The Badgers return to action on Friday, when they host border rival Iowa in the Big Ten opener for both teams. The dual meet is set for 5 p.m. at the UW Natatorium.
