Big Ten Rowing Championships on Saturday
May 01, 2008 | Women's Rowing
The UW women's openweight rowers have enjoyed cooperative water conditions for much of the spring and are set to enter the championships portion of their schedule this weekend at the 2008 Big Ten Championships. This year's event takes place on Belleville Lake in Ann Arbor, Mich., this Saturday.
The Badgers will look to improve on their fifth-place finish from last year when the team raced here in Madison on Lake Wingra. The varsity eight also placed fifth and is seeded as such again this year.
To make it to this year's varsity eight grand final, the Badgers will take on No. 3 seed Ohio State and No. 4 seed Minnesota in the second heat. The top two boats in each heat advance to the grand final.
Races will also take place in the second varsity eight, varsity four, second varsity four, novice eight and second novice eight. The second varsity eight, varsity four and varsity eight make up the boats raced in NCAA competition.
Wisconsin is seeded fourth in the second varsity eight, third in the varsity four, first in the second varsity four, third in the novice eight and first in the second novice eight.
Scoring at the Big Ten championships is done on a weighted basis, with the varsity eight race worth the most points, followed by the second varsity eight, varsity four, second varsity four, novice eight and second novice eight boats.
The Badger women last raced on April 19 at the Big Ten Double Duals. Wisconsin rowers earned 10 victories in 12 events against then-No. 11 Ohio State and Indiana. The UW won everything but the varsity eight and second varsity eight against Ohio State.
