In their Big Ten conference opener and the second meet of the season, the Wisconsin women's swimming and diving team defeated Iowa 206-92, claiming first place in every swimming event.
The Badgers' 200-yard medley relay team, which looks to be one of the most competitive in the conference, started the meet off with a win for the women. The team, comprised of sophomore Maggie Meyer, freshman Ashley Wanland, senior Christine Zwiegers and freshman Beckie Thompson, clocked a time of 1:44.01.
Wisconsin also took first in the 400-yard freestyle relay, winning by nearly three seconds to tally up more team points for the Badgers. The winning free relay team was junior Rosie Morahan, Thompson, Meyer and senior Jen Illescas.
In addition to her contribution in the freestyle relay, Illescas recorded first-place finishes in the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly and in the 200-yard freestyle, where she finished in 1:49.99. Junior Candice Peak also played a large role in the women's victory, taking first in the 200-yard backstroke and the 200-yard individual medley, while putting up a second place in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing behind teammate Meyer.
The Badgers took first, second and third in several events, including the 200-yard breaststroke by Wanland, junior Libby Brooks and freshman Megan Onstott, the 100-yard freestyle by Meyer, Thompson and Morahan and the 1000-yard freestyle by junior Gabby Maddalena, freshman Danielle Beckwith and freshman Kelly Winckler.
The Hawkeyes defeated the Badgers in all diving events, taking first in the 1-meter and 3-meter events. Wisconsin junior Emily Cheffins was the top Badger in 3-meter diving, tallying a score of 255.00 for a second-place finish behind Iowa's Deidre Freeman. Wisconsin sophomore CIara Rinaudo finished third in the event. In the 1-meter competition, Freeman took first again and second went to Rinaudo with a final score of 258.15.
Wisconsin aquatics go on the road again next weekend to Dallas, Texas, to participate in the annual SMU classic at the Perkins Natatorium. Check UWBadgers.com for meet results and recaps.
