UW Top Seed in Two Big Ten Rowing Events
April 24, 2007 | Women's Rowing
The Big Ten released the seeding for the 2007 Big Ten Rowing Championships, set for Saturday on Lake Wingra in Madison. The host Badgers earned the top seed in two of the five seeded events.
Wisconsin, fifth place a year ago at Big Ten rowing, earned the top seed in the second varsity four and the novice eight for this year's event. The Badgers won the novice eight event at the 2006 championships. The Badgers are the fifth seed in the varsity eight and second varsity eight, while the Badgers are seed fourth in the varsity four.
Earning the other No. 1 seeds were Ohio State in the varsity eight and Minnesota in both the second varsity eight and varsity four. The second novice eight is an unseeded event.
Seven teams will compete in the eighth Big Ten rowing championships as it returns to the site of the inaugural event in 2000, including the Badgers, Ohio State, Minnesota, Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa and Indiana. As the Big Ten's oldest women 's rowing program, Wisconsin celebrates its 35th anniversary this weekend still searching for its first conference title. The UW earned its best finish in 2004, taking second at the event.
Only three teams have captured Big Ten rowing titles, led by Michigan's four titles. Ohio State owns two titles, while Michigan State won the 2005 championship for its lone crown.
Going by the seedings for the event, No. 8 Minnesota appears to be the favorite to become the fourth team to capture a Big Ten rowing title, however No. 3 Ohio State is the highest ranked team in the field. Other ranked varsity eights include No. 12 Michigan and No. 19 Michigan State. The Badgers are receiving votes in the most recent poll, but are somewhat of an unknown because of their limited racing results this spring.
The full seeding for the event, as well as the scoring for the team title, is listed below.
