Badger Women Excel at Midwests
April 21, 2007 | Women's Rowing
The University of Wisconsin women's rowing teams competed at the 35th annual Midwest Rowing Championships Saturday on Lake Wingra in Madison, Wis. The openweights and lightweights raced against each other most of the day, as there was only a small number of collegiate teams in attendance. The No. 1 ranked lightweights stole the show, winning three of the five openweight events they entered.
Both teams were very grateful of the much needed competition on the water, even though it was against fellow teammates. It was a beautiful sunny day in Madison, but the wind made the water choppy for most of the day. The weather allowed all the races to finish and overall it was a great day for rowing.
The lightweight A boat consisting of coxswain Phoebe Kasdin, Dani Dewitt, Katherine Fink, Ellie Peterson, Adrienne Winfield, Sarah Padway, Ellie Carroll, Anne Gottwald, Kaela Erickson won the novice eight and the second open eight races. The boat took first in the novice eight with a time of 6:28.3 and won the second varsity eight in 6:41.0.
The lightweight team of Kristin Hedstrom, Margot Schoellkopf won the pairs race in a time of 7:25.8, while fellow UW rowers Jen Lhost, Cecily Shiel came in second with a 7:37.6. The pairs race was all Wisconsin as all five boats finished in less than 7:45.3.
On the openweight side, Wisconsin won the open fours and the open eights to round off a productive day for UW crew. The openweight four B boat of Coxswain Claire Geiger, Meghan Roh, Stacey Nelson, Robyn Laatsch and Kat Guerra won their morning heat and went on to win the final race in the time of 7:02.9.
The openweight eights were won by the Wisconsin A boat in the time of 6:18.8. The A boat was coxed by Jess Bartelt and consised of Bailey Thompson, Maggie Galloway, Theresa Shields, Denise Kragness, Susan Masterson, Sarah Wrenshall, Stephanie Koepp and Kirsten Kuhn.
After a sunny day of rowing, the openweights start preparation for the 2007 Big Ten Championships held on Lake Wingra next Saturday, April 28. Racing will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday is free for all fans. Visit uwbadgers.com for more information about the regatta.
The lightweights will be preparing this week for a double-dual in Indianapolis against Ohio State, Georgetown and Stanford on April 28, where they will look to hold onto their share of the nation's No. 1 ranking.
