Badgers to Battle Top Competition at Texas Invitational
November 28, 2007 | Women's Swimming & Diving
The University of Wisconsin women's swimming and diving returns to the pool this weekend following a near-two week layoff as it heads to Austin, Texas for the annual Texas Invitational at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Lasting Thursday Nov. 29 through Saturday Dec. 1, the three-day event will feature some of the best teams in the nation competing in over 20 events.
The Badgers enter the tournament as the No. 19 team in the country, but they are not the only teams in the field to have the distinction of being ranked. Stanford (No. 3), Arizona (4), SMU (12), Texas (16) and Arizona State (17) are all ranked in the latest College Swim Coaches Association of America poll. The other teams competing in the meet are Nebraska, TCU and UNLV.
The Badgers have fared well at the meet in the past. Two years ago the Badgers finished third with 525 points, while last year the team was fourth with 406 points.
In their last event, the Badgers earned a pair of victories at the Northwestern Triangular. Wisconsin downed Notre Dame 218-151 and rallied to beat host-Northwestern 196-173.
Freshman Maggie Meyer helped lead the Badgers to victory with three first-place finishes. She helped lead the 200-yard medley relay to a win, while also winning individually in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke. Meyer earned a NCAA 'B ' time for her mark in the 200-yard backstroke.
Junior Jen Illescas also put forth a solid effort for the Badgers. She earned two NCAA 'B' times as she won the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly.
The Texas Invitational will begin with prelims starting at 10:00 a.m. each day and the finals at 6:00 p.m. each night.
