Women's Swimming and Diving Heads to Northwestern Triangular
November 16, 2007 | Women's Swimming & Diving
Following a two-week layoff, the No. 16 University of Wisconsin women's swimming and diving team (3-1) returns to action this weekend as it heads to Evanston, Ill. to take on No. 22 Notre Dame and Northwestern in the Northwestern Triangular.
According to NUsports.com, the meet will follow the Big Ten and NCAA Championships format over three sessions of competition. The meet will start at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, with the second session starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17. The final session begins at 5 p.m. Saturday evening. Though the meet is in invitational format, dual-meet scoring still will be used.
Notre Dame (1-3) and Northwestern (2-1) will provide good competition for the Badgers.
The Fighting Irish are coming off of a season in which they captured their 11th-consecutive Big East championship and finished 27th at the NCAA Championships. While Notre Dame is 1-3 on the season, one of the losses came at the hands of No. 9 Minnesota and the team did win the Dennis Stark Relays and bested Big Ten member Purdue this year.
Following a season-opening loss to No. 23 Indiana, Northwestern has responded with two victories in a row. After besting Illinois-Chicago on Oct. 27, the Wildcats went on the road and won at Purdue on Nov. 3. Last year, the Wildcats finished seventh at the Big Ten Championships and 41st at the NCAA Championships. Northwestern had no seniors on last year 's roster, so it will provide an experienced group to challenge the Badgers.
In its last competition, Wisconsin traveled to Arizona to battle the No. 4 Wildcats. Arizona ended up winning the meet 166-128, but the Badgers performed well, setting 11 season-best times in the meet's 16 events. The Badgers also recorded six NCAA 'B' times, including four set by junior Jen Illescas.
The Northwestern Triangular begins tonight at 5 p.m. Saturday's competition starts at 10:00 a.m. Fans can check back to UWBadgers.com for results.
