October 09, 2007 | Women's Swimming & Diving
Fresh off this weekend's decisive 159-80 victory over UW-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin women's swimming and diving team swept the Big Ten Weekly Awards.
It's the first time since Oct. 10th of last season that the Badgers swept the awards.
Earning the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week award is senior Jackie Vavrek. A native of West Chicago, Ill., Vavrek earned three first-place finishes this weekend in the win over UW-Green Bay. She won the 50-yard freestyle (23.36), 200-yard medley relay (1:46.54), and the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:36.60). This is Vavrek's first career weekly accolade and becomes the first Badger since Yi Ting Siow was honored Jan. 23rd of last season.
Taking home Big Ten Diver of the Week honors is freshman Ciara Rinaudo. Rinaudo, a native of Phoenix, Ariz., had an impressive collegiate debut. In her two dives she posted a first-place and a third-place finish. Her first-place showing came in the one-meter dive with a score of 214.28, while her third-place performance was on the three-meter diving board with a score of 217.73. This is Rinaudo's first weekly award and is the first Badger diver to win since sophomore Jenny Hawkins did it in October of last year.
The University of Wisconsin women's swimming and diving team returns to action this Thursday and Friday as it hosts Iowa and UW-Milwaukee. The Badgers and Hawkeyes will square off at 5:00 p.m. Thursday night, while the Badgers will face the Panthers at 5:00 p.m. on Friday evening. Both meets will be held at the Natatorium.
