Wisconsin Rowing Winter Training: Day 9
January 18, 2007 | Women's Rowing
Wisconsin's women's rowing programs are in Cocoa Beach, Fla., getting some much needed water time during the semester break. Various members of the team will be sending daily updates for fans to follow along with the progress of the squad. With the spring season just around the corner, the openweights and lightweights are putting in their time now so they will be at their best when racing season begins in March.
Today's eighth entry, on Jan. 17, was submitted by junior openweight Katharine Waller.
Cocoa Beach--Day 9
Hello all you Wisco Rowing fans!
We have really been blessed this whole trip with amazing weather and, knock on wood, this will be the first year we have not lost any water time due to poor conditions. Today started off a little cool much like Wednesday morning of last week, but it warmed up and the sun came out in full force. We went out in three pairs, a four, and two eights and did mostly steady state rowing and some drills.
The afternoon was then, once again, ours for play and there were many different activities that took place. Some girls headed to Orlando to a great outlet mall for some retail therapy, while others headed to the Kennedy Space Center to learn all about NASA and shuttles. Two girls, namely Shayla and Theresa, caught up on some sleep by taking a long, and by long I mean over two hours, nap. There were others too, including myself, who stuck around the hotel and went for beach walks or relaxed out by the pool.
Some of my roommates and I walked down to a pier with lots of shops and a great ice cream shop. We went out to the tip of the pier, almost got assaulted by some huge pelicans, and met some surfers who let us try out a couple of waves on their boards. They might have just been flattering us, but they told us we were pretty good for beginners. Overall, it was a fantastic and fun-filled afternoon!
As for right now, we are all back to our rooms in food comas from the phenomenal dinner we just ate at a restaurant near our hotel. We go to this place every year as a team and we are always well satisfied. It's raining pretty steadily right now, so hopefully that clears up for tomorrow morning's practice'only three left of the trip. Thanks for keeping up with us, and I know I speak for the whole team when I say we really appreciate all your support and hope to see you cheering us on in all your red gear at Big Ten's April 28 at UW!
On Wisconsin!
