34th Annual Midwest Rowing Championships Set for Saturday
April 21, 2006 | Lightweight Rowing
The No. 3 Wisconsin lightweight women, the No. 8 Wisconsin men and the No. 18 Wisconsin openweight women's rowers compete Saturday on Lake Wingra at the 34th annual Midwest Rowing Championships.
Started in 1973 by former UW men's rowing coach Randy Jablonic, the event is a showcase for rowing and the University of Wisconsin rowing programs to the Madison community.
The UW men have captured 30 of the 32 varsity eight races - the 2005 event was cancelled due to high winds - and as recently as 2003 set the course record of 5:14.40 over the 1,850-meter course. The UW openweight women also boast 30 of 32 varsity eight titles in the event, including their 1986 course record of 5:54.80. The UW lightweight eight boasts seven race titles in nine years, while the boat took part in the openweight race in the other two years.
Twenty-three schools and clubs will take part in the 2006 event beginning at 8 a.m. with the men's novice four heats. Racing concludes with the last event at 3:50 p.m., the men's open eight. In between races begin every 15 minutes in the morning and every 10 minutes in the afternoon, with about a 45-minute break after the 10:45 a.m. women's junior four event.
