UW's top-ranked women's lightweight team, as well as Wisconsin's top openweight boats, raced at the 33rd annual San Diego Crew Classic Saturday in San Diego, Calif. The two-day regatta, which took place on Misson Bay, consisted of multiple races where teams competed for specific cup trophies.
Wisconsin competed in four races Saturday. Beginning bright and early at 8:20 a.m., the lightweight boat raced in the Women's Cal Cup C event. The women raced well, taking third only to SAC State who finished in a time of 6:42.10 and Kansas State who claimed the second place spot. UW finished in a time of 6:45.25.
Next up for the Badgers was the Jessop-Whittier Cup B race, commencing at 8:50 a.m. Wisconsin competed against the best, again earning a third place finish in a time of 6:29.41. USC crossed the line first in a time of 6:24.80, while Notre Dame was second finishing in 6:28.53.
At 10:00 a.m., the Women's JV B race began and Wisconsin was again represented in the 2000 meter course sprint. Teams raced for the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy. USC took the number one spot, but UW earned a highly respectable second place finish in a time of 6:43.60, exactly one second behind the Trojans. Third place went to Notre Dame who clocked a 6:45.61 time.
The lightweight team took to the water for a second time at 11:50 a.m., racing for the A.W. Coggeshall Cup in the Women's Collegiate Lightweight Final. Wisconsin dominated the race, easily earning the top finish in a time of 7:06.20, over 20 seconds ahead of second place finisher Stanford who clocked a 7:27.18.
"We finished well and strong. It was a great weekend to try different line-ups and get a solid set of races under our belts and we were able to get everyone racing," said head coach Bebe Bryans.
Bryans added, "We were really pleased with the results and feel pretty confident that we're off to a good start. We're looking forward to getting back on the water when we get home, hopefully, and continuing on with our racing season."
Racing will begin again early Sunday morning, with Wisconsin competing in three final boat races. The women can be seen rowing for the Jessop-Whittier Cup in the Women's Varsity Eight Grand Final, the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy in the Women's JV Grand Final and the Women's Cal Cup Petite Final.
