Wisconsin Races In Iowa
April 01, 2006 | Women's Rowing
Wisconsin fours and novice eights raced against Minnesota, Iowa and Creighton in Iowa City, Iowa, Saturday. While the UW's top boats raced at the San Diego Crew Classic, the Badgers took the second varsity four and novice eight events, but fell in the varsity four and second novice eight races on the Iowa River.
Facing a strong head wind and choppy water conditions, the UW novice eight rowed a 7:31.67 to outdistance Minnesota (7:35.70), Creighton (8:09.59) and host Iowa (8:24.51) and win the race.
In the second varsity four, Wisconsin took the top two spots with the second varsity four winning the 2,000-meter race in 8:41.52, and the third varsity four taking second in 8:42.53. Minnesota's second varsity four rounded out the race in third place, over 15 seconds behind the Badger entries.
The UW second novice eight appeared to have its race wrapped up near the finish line, but would be passed by Minnesota late in the race.
'They caught a crab about 10 strokes before the finish line and had been in the lead at that point so it was disappointing that they weren't able to finish the race very effectively,' said UW assistant coach Amy Appleton.
The Gophers took the event with an 8:06.34, topping the UW's 8:19.39. Wisconsin's lightweight entry was third in 8:35.15, while Iowa finished fourth, over five seconds behind the UW lightweights.
Appleton concluded, 'We look forward to racing again next weekend and doing what we need to do to improve between now and then.
Wisconsin's openweights return to the water Saturday, April 8 against Indiana and Notre Dame on Lake Lemon in Indianapolis, while the UW lightweights compete April 8-9 at the Knecht Cup on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.
