March 20, 2006 | Women's Rowing
Wisconsin women's rowing wrapped its first regatta of the season, finishing at the sixth annual Longhorn Invitational, Sunday on Town Lake in Austin Texas. The Badgers performed well for the third-straight day, concluding a week of spring break training.
The UW No. 8 varsity openweight eight stayed unbeaten on the weekend, knocking off Miami on the 2,000-meter course. The Badgers' time of 6:41.4 was 11 seconds better than the Hurricanes.
Wisconsin also won the second varsity eight and varsity four against Miami, and so swept all three boats that race in NCAA competition.
In racing for the lightweights, the UW's second lightweight eight took out the Texas openweight third varsity eight. The Badgers stroked to a 7:04.1, while the host-Longhorns finished in 7:08.6. The UW varsity lightweight eight lost its race to the Texas novice eight.
'We finished strong,' said head coach Bebe Bryans. 'It was a great weekend to try some different lineups and to get a solid set of races under our belts. We were able to get everyone racing and are really pleased with the results and feel pretty confident that we are off to a good start.'
Wisconsin returns to Madison for training, before returning to competition on April 1. The openweights and lightweight varsity and second varsity eights will compete at the San Diego Crew Classic on April 1-2 on Mission Bay, while the rest of the openweights will compete against Iowa and Minnesota in Iowa City on April 1.
