March 18, 2006 | Women's Rowing
The Wisconsin women's openweight and lightweight programs opened their spring seasons at the Longhorn Invitational on Town Lake in Austin, Texas, Friday afternoon.
With their spring training trip nearing an end, the UW women saw their first outside competition against Iowa, Texas and Kansas State in various boats.
In the No. 8 openweights only varsity eight race, the Badgers edged host Texas, finishing the 2,000-meter course in 6:36.98, just under a second ahead of the Longhorns. Texas clocked a 6:37.95.
UW boats also knocked off UT in the second varsity eight, third varsity eight and novice eight races. The UW second varsity eights held the largest victory margin, winning by over eight seconds in the race.
The rest of the UW novice boats struggled, comparatively, against Texas, falling in the second novice eight, while the UW lightweight novice eight fell to the Longhorns.
In other action, the Badger novice four dropped a race to Kansas State, while the third novice four knocked off Iowa.
The Badgers return to the water on Saturday for day two of the Longhorn Invitation.
