Badger Drop Fifth Straight
November 19, 2006 | Men's Hockey
The UW men's hockey team (4-8-2, 3-6-1 WCHA) fell to border rival Minnesota 3-1 Sunday afternoon in Minneapolis, Minn. Ben Street scored the lone Badger goal, his second of the season.
The Badgers struck first as Street (Coquitlam, B.C.) scored during even strength play giving the Badgers the 1-0 lead at the 14:37 mark in the second period.
The third period belonged to the Gophers. Minnesota tallied three goals in the final frame to secure the weekend sweep over Wisconsin. Minnesota's Ryan Stoa started the scoring at the 4:49 mark of the period, tying the game 1-1. Then, with just over five minutes to play, Tony Lucia notched the game winner as he was able to slip a loose puck past UW's Brian Elliott (Newmarket, Ontario).
With 1:06 left in the game and down 2-1, head coach Mike Eaves elected to pull Elliott out of goal, giving the Badgers the extra attacker. With just 47 seconds left, Minnesota's Blake Wheeler was able to break up a Badger pass and score on the empty net.
Elliott finished with 27 saves, while Minnesota's Jeff Frazee recorded 23. The Badgers finished today's game 0-for-5 on the power play, ending the weekend scoreless on the man advantage. Minnesota also went 0-for-5 in today's contest.
The Badgers return home next weekend to host the College Hockey Showcase November 24-25. Wisconsin takes on Michigan Friday night and Michigan State Saturday night. Both games are set to start at 7 p.m.
