Badgers Travel to Indiana

The Wisconsin men's and women's swimming and diving teams continue on with the 2005 season as they travel to Indiana this weekend. Wisconsin joins Indiana, Louisville, and Southern Illinois in the four team meet. The meet will take place at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center on Nov. 4 at 1 p.m.
The Wisconsin women's team picked up its second Big Ten win with a 157-111 win over Penn State but suffered a narrow 138.5-123.5 loss to fifth-ranked Arizona last Friday in Tucson, Ariz. Wisconsin swept the Top 3 spots in the 200-yard backstroke. Junior captain Susan Johnson earned first-place honors in the event with a time of 2:01.30. Fellow captain Anna Trinidad placed second (2:01.66) while Andrea Wiesner finished third (2:02.33).
The Wisconsin men's swimming and diving team was defeated by Arizona 176-85 last Friday. Junior captain Tom Molzahn led the Badgers with three wins. Molzahn finished first in every individual event he competed in against the Wildcats. He won the 200-yard freestyle after posting a time of 1:41.31 and also claimed the 200-butterfly with a mark of 1:52.75. Molzahn wrapped up the day with a win in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 4:35.56.
Wisconsin did not compete against Indiana, Louisville, or Southern Illinois last season.
The No. 16 Indiana women's swimming and diving team dominated No. 23 Minnesota, 177.5-122.5 at the meet on Saturday. Junior Annica Lofstedt led IU with four event titles, including the 200-yard medley relay (1:45.51), 50-yard freestyle (23.60), 100-yard freestyle (50.80), and 100-yard butterfly (55.92). Meanwhile, the Indiana men's swimming and diving team was defeated by Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn. on Saturday, 163-137. Senior Sergiy Fesenko paced the Hoosiers with three wins, including the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:09.14), 200-yard butterfly (1:49.99), and 500-yard freestyle (4:28.00).
The University of Louisville women's swim team won ten of 13 events to upset West Virginia 156-88 on Saturday. Freshman Ashley Jackson took a first-place win in the 1000-free and the 500-free, finishing at 5:06.78 for the 500 win. Leslie Van Winkle won the 200-free in 1:51.40 and the 100-free in 52.08. Meanwhile, the the University of Louisville men were edged 141-90 against West Virginia on Saturday, despite winning three events. Andrei Teudean won the 200-back in 1:53.35. Vali Preda, swimming in his first collegiate meet, won the 200 breast in 2:05.54.
Freshmen Isabel Madeira leads Southern Illinois, finishing 52.50 in the 100 Free and 1:53.05 in the 200 Free against the University of Evansville last week. Madiera was honored MVC Swimmer of the Week for her performance. On the men's side, sophomore Antonio Santoro fronts the team, winning the 200 Free (1:39.82) and 200 Fly (1:51.14), and 200 Free Relay (1:24.97) with Dennis Hedo, Stephan Ackerman and Bryan Riekena against the University of Evansville.
The Badgers return to action Nov. 10 with a dual meet against Big Ten foe Northwestern. The meet is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the UW Natatorium.
