UW Takes on Northwestern for Senior Day
November 10, 2005 | Women's Swimming & Diving
For the final home meet of the fall season, the University of Wisconsin swimming and diving team will play host to Northwestern at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Natatorium.
Seven seniors'Michael Hamm (Waukesha, Wis.), Emily Carpenter (Lee's Summit, Mo.), Sarah Hernandez (Chico, Calif.), Rebecca Johansson (Greensboro, N.C.), Amalia Sarnecki (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Anna Trinidad (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Amanda Witte (LaGrange, Ill.)'will be honored before the dual meet begins.
'Our group of seniors have left their mark on our program not only through performance but also through consistency and training,' head coach Eric Hansen said. 'The message by which they trained enabled those around them to raise their level of performance. We will miss each and everyone of them, and they can feel proud of their contributions.'
Trinidad (200-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke) and Hernandez (50- and 100-yard freestyles) each won two events at last week's quad meet in Bloomington, Ind., to lead the women's team to a 7-1 record and a No. 11 national ranking. Two other Badgers'freshmen Yi Ting Siow (200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard IM) and Jennifer Illescas (500- and 1650-yard freestyles)'also captured titles in two events.
Hamm, in his second year as a team captain, is the only senior on the men's side. He tallied third-place finishes in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles last week. Tom Molzahn, meanwhile, won the 500-yard freestyle and nabbed second in the 200-yard freestyle.
The Wildcat women (2-1) topped Michigan State last week but fell to Purdue. Freshman Chelsea Davis was victorious on the 3-meter board, and sophomore Andrea Hupman won the 100-yard freestyle.
On the men's side, Co-Big Ten Swimmer of the Week Mike Alexandrov won three events, reeling off an NCAA 'B' time in the 200-yard IM, to lead No. 13 NU (2-2), which also beat MSU and lost to Purdue.
'We look forward to our dual meet against Northwestern. It 's a tradition for us, we really enjoy it and it's our final tune-up before the Minnesota Invite,' Hansen said. 'We're looking to be better than we have been this season, and we're hoping to see'especially from our freshmen'a good performance.'
