UW Cruises Past Northwestern, 148-75

The Wisconsin women's swimming and diving team defeated Northwestern 148-75 Thursday at the UW Natatorium. Senior Amalia Sarnecki recorded two first-place finishes for the Badgers in individual events while both the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay teams also picked up wins.
'All in all, I was pretty happy with the meet,' head coach Eric Hansen said. 'On the women's side, in terms of our preparation, I think we are ahead of where we were last year, and we will find out more about that in Texas.'
Sarnecki (Ann Arbor, Mich.) swam her way to a victory in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.28. She picked up her second win of the day in the 100-yard breaststroke, completing the event in a time of 1:04.01.
Sarnecki also was part of the 200-yard medley relay'along with Susan Johnson (Toledo, Ohio), Jenny Gelden (Kenosha, Wis.) and Sarah Hernandez (Chico, Calif.)'which took first with a time of 1:45.51. The 200-yard freestyle relay team also picked up a first-place finish with a mark of 1:35.13.
In other victories for Wisconsin (8-1), Rebecca Johansson (Greensboro, N.C.) won the 1000-yard freestyle (10:12.62), Jennifer Illescas (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) earned a win in the 500-yard freestyle (4:59.37) and Jenny Gelden (Kenosha, Wis.) claimed the title in the 100-yard butterfly (56.59).
On the boards, senior Amanda Witte (LaGrange, Ill.) led Wisconsin with second-place finishes in the 1-meter (287.48) and 3-meter (328.28) events, while sophomore Laura Davidson (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) received third-place finishes in the 1-meter (255.68) and 3-meter (303.30).
'Amanda dived solidly. She has been solid all year, ' diving coach Josh Seykora said . 'Laura also did well, getting her zone cut tonight. It was a breakthrough meet for her.'
Wisconsin will next head to Minneapolis for the Minnesota Invitational Nov. 18-20.
