The Wisconsin women's swimming and diving team defeated UW-Green Bay 154-83 Friday in the season opener at the UW Natatorium. Senior Emily Carpenter and junior Andrea Wiesner recorded two first-place finishes for the Badgers in individual events while both the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay teams also picked up wins.
'It was fun to see everyone compete for the first time this season, especially the huge group of freshman we have,' Eric Hansen, Wisconsin head coach, said. 'Obviously, it shows we have a lot of work to do. We weren 't very fast, but we came together as a team. We are starting a week earlier than we have before, so we aren't quite where we need to be. We open the Big Ten season next Thursday things will start to come together.'
Carpenter (Lee's Summit, Mo.) swam her way to a victory in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.25. She picked up her second win of the day in the 100-yard freestyle, completing the event in a time of 52.80. Wiesner (Montrose, Colo.), meanwhile, earned a first-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:07.05 and also tallied a win in the 200-yard back with a time of 2:06.67.
Senior Rebecca Johansson (Greensboro, N.C.) won the 1000-yard freestyle (10:22.01) while freshman Jennifer Illescas (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) earned a win in the 500-yard freestyle (5:04.80) and senior Sarah Hernandez (Chico, Calif.) claimed the 50-yard freestyle (24.31).
Sophomore Jenny Gelden (Kenosha, Wis.) paced the Badgers in the 200-yard butterfly, winning the event in a time of 2:07.04. Rookie Yi Ting Siow won her first event as a Badger after finishing the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:17.62.
'Emily Carpenter and Yi Ting (Siow) were both really impressive today,' Hansen said. 'Emily is in her senior year and she is proving that she is prepared and it is important to her to be successful.'
The 200-yard medley relay team of Hernandez, Gelden, Amalia Sarnecki (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Anna Trinidad (Colorado Springs, Colo.) picked up first-place laurels in the event with a mark of 1:47.03. Susan Johnson (Toledo, Ohio), Katie Imhoff-Smith (Waukesha, Wis.), Siow and Jackie Vavrek (West Chicago, Ill.) finished second in a time of 1:48.04.
Wisconsin's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Hannah McClurg (San Diego, Calif.), Illescas, Jenny Will (Mequon, Wis.) and Hernandez won the event in a time of 1:36.95.
On the boards, senior Amanda Witte (LaGrange, Ill.) led Wisconsin with two second-place finishes in the 1-meter (227.40) and 3-meter (231.00) events.
'We have a lot of work to do but we are light years ahead of last year,' Josh Seykora, head diving coach, said.
Wisconsin will play host to in-state rival UW-Milwaukee and Big Ten foe Iowa at 4 p.m. Thursday in the UW Natatorium.
