The University of Wisconsin men's and women's swimming and diving teams will compete in their second meet of the season Thursday when the Badgers welcome Iowa and UW-Milwaukee for a double dual meet. The competition will take place at 4 p.m. at the UW Natatorium.
The Badger women defeated both UW-Milwaukee and Iowa at the meets last year, posting scores of 200-42, and 243-108, respectively.
Most recently, the Badgers defeated UW-Green Bay 154-83 Oct. 7 in the season opener at the UW Natatorium. Senior Emily Carpenter and junior Andrea Wiesner recorded two first-place finishes for the Badgers in individual events while both the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay teams also picked up wins. Carpenter was recently awarded Big Ten Swimmer of the Week.
UW-Milwaukee earned a fifth-place showing in the opening of its 2005-06 season at the 41st Annual Dennis Stark Relays. The event, which took place at Notre Dame, included eight schools.
Last season, UW-Milwaukee then-sophomore Lindsay Caldwell took third place in the 200 breaststroke and 50 freestyle to lead the Panther women at the non-scoring Madison Invitational. Then-freshmen Emma McKeith and Kristin Skiba each posted third- and sixth-place finishes at the meet, respectively.
The coed meet will be the first competition of the season for the Iowa Hawkeyes, who held an intrasquad meet on Saturday, Oct. 8.
Iowa freshman Ashley Dell won three events at the intraquad meet, including the 1000 free, 200 free and 500 free. Junior Emmy Haeger finished first in both the 50 free and 200 breast.
The Badger men, meanwhile, also defeated both Milwaukee and Iowa at the meets last year, posting scores of 188-55, and 209-138, respectively.
Wisconsin beat UW-Green Bay 140-95 Oct. 7 at the UW Natatorium in the opener to the 2005-06 season. Freshman Scott Rice led the Badgers with wins in the 200-yard butterfly and 500-yard freestyle. Sophomore Brett Koerten also picked up two victories for Wisconsin, claiming the 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard breaststroke.
Meanwhile, UW-Milwaukee placed fourth out of seven teams at the 41st Annual Dennis Stark Relays at Notre Dame. It marked the season opener for the Panthers.
Last season, senior Michael Belting and sophomore Chase Gravengood each posted third- and fourth-place finishes in leading the Milwaukee men at the meet.
Iowa junior Nick Divan and sophomore Dragos Agache both took two wins at the school's intrasquad meet on Oct. 8. Divon won the 200 free and 500 free, while Agache posted first place in the 50 free and 200 breast.
On the boards, Amanda Witte and Josh Bonner led the Badgers last week and will look to do the same this week. Both divers nabbed honors for Big Ten Diver of the Week because of their performances.
The UW women's team will compete Oct. 20-23 at the SMU Classic in Dallas. The next home meet for the Badgers will be Nov. 10 against Northwestern. The competition is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the UW Natatorium.
