Wisconsin Women's Rowing Continues at NCAA Championships
May 29, 2004 | Women's Rowing
The University of Wisconsin wrapped up day two of the 2004 NCAA Rowing Championships with a 16th-place finish in the varsity eight and results in the second varsity eight and varsity four that put the Badgers in Sunday petite finals in both events.
The varsity eight took fourth in the C final to place 16th in the event, overall. Like they did in their two previous heats, the Badgers got off the line slowly and never fully recovered. Wisconsin jumped into third in the C final at the 1500-meter split ahead of Texas, but dropped behind the Longhorns over the final 500 meters to place fourth in the final and 16th overall. Michigan State won the final to place 13th, with Washington State taking 14th and Texas, 15th.
A start again hurt Wisconsin in the second varsity eight as the UW fell to fifth by 500 meters and remained in that position the rest of the way. California won the repechage heat to advance to the grand final, while Michigan took second to earn the other entry to the grand final. Princeton and Harvard finished third and fourth in the heat and will compete with the Badgers in Sunday's petite final.
In the varsity four, the Badgers placed fourth, 2.8 seconds behind second-place Yale and a grand final qualifying position. The UW varsity four began strong, reaching 500 meters in second, less than one second behind Brown and over a second ahead of Yale. The UW boat kept its second position past the 1500-meter mark, but failed to hold on as Yale and Michigan State both edged past the Badgers before the line. Finishing fifth and joining Wisconsin and Michigan State in tomorrow's petite final was Washington State.
Sunday, Wisconsin races at 10:30 PDT in the varsity four petite final, then at 11 a.m. PDT in the second varsity eight petite final to close out the championship. Racing takes place at CSUS Aquatics Center on Lake Natoma.
