Badgers Light Up Mavericks
December 13, 2003 | Men's Hockey
The Wisconsin men's hockey team finished what it started Friday night, beating the Minnesota State Mavericks by a score of 4-1. With 5:10 left in Friday's game, the Kohl Center lost power and the remainder of the game was suspended until Saturday night when the Badgers not only maintained their 3-1 lead on the Mavericks, but also tacked on another goal before time expired.
The Mavericks were skating with a two-man advantage after a late penalty was called on Mark Heatley (Calgary, Alberta) and the goalie was pulled, but Adam Burish (Madison, Wis.) beat MSU to the empty net to tally the fourth goal for UW. Jake Dowell (Eau Claire, Wis.), with his ninth assist of the season, and Jeff Likens (Barrington, Ill.) helped him bring the puck up the ice at 19:43 in the third period.
In a recap of Friday's play, MSU's Shane Joseph netted the Mavericks only goal of the game only 1:15 into the contest. Freshman Mark Heatley snatched the first goal for the Badgers to tie the game at 10:34 in the first period. Jeff Likens helped the Badgers take the lead, sliding the puck through the posts at 8:06 in the second frame and Ryan MacMurchy's (Regina, Sask.) goal followed a minute and a half later to make the score 3-1 before power was lost and the game suspended.
Bernd Bruckler (Graz, Austria) made 21 saves and MSU's Jon Volp blocked 33 shots on goal.
Wisconsin's win extends its unbeaten streak to 13 games, including all of the team's home games in the 2003-04 season. Prior to this game, the Badgers had not beaten the Mavericks in their last four meetings.
The second game of the Badgers series against the Minnesota State began at approximately 7:40 p.m.
