The Wisconsin Badgers (2-1-0, 0-0-0 WCHA) defeated the University of Alabama-Huntsville Chargers 4-2 Friday night at the Kohl Center. The Badgers took 32 shots and had four unanswered goals in the win.
Brad Winchester scored the first and only goal of the first period at 7:59. Winchester took a shot from the point that was saved by UAH goalie Mark Byrne. Sophomore Pete Talafous gained control of the rebound in the corner and passed it behind the net to defender Erik Jensen. Jensen passed the puck up to Winchester in front for the goal.
Midway in the second period, Badger Rene Bourque scored his second goal of the season on a five-on-three power play. Bourque took a wrist shot in front of the net to beat the UAH netminder. Alex Leavitt and Dan Boeser assisted on the power-play goal. Bourque's goal brought the score to 2-0 at the end of the second period.
Less than a minute into the third period defender Mark Jackson scored his second goal of the season and what would be the game-winning goal. Jackson backhanded the puck in the front of the crease for the goal off of passes from freshman Tom Gilbert and Winchester.
Gilbert and Winchester then assisted on the final goal for the Badgers which was scored by Jenson at 9:58 of the third. Winchester carried the puck into the offensive zone and passed the puck up to Gilbert. Gilbert then passed the puck up to Jensen who crashed the net for the goal.
Four minutes later, the Chargers made their first answer to the Badger's four goals with a power-play goal by Karlis Zirnis. After another four minutes the chargers struck again. UAH Charger Craig Bushey snuck one past UW netminder Scott Kabotoff for the final goal of the game.
Scott Kabotoff made 31 saves in his second victory of the season. The game was also Kabotoff's second start of the season.
The weekend series against the UAH Chargers will continue tomorrow at the Kohl Center. The puck is scheduled to drop at 8:05p.m.
