December 02, 2001 | Women's Swimming & Diving
The Wisconsin women's swimming and diving team ended the Texas Invitational Sunday at Austin, Texas. The Badgers finished the three-day event in eighth place with 373 points.
'The weekend as a whole was very positive,' Hansen said. 'Carly Piper's A-cut in the mile was a solid step for both her and our women's team.'
Piper (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) earned her 'A-cut' ' an NCAA automatic qualifying time ' in the 1650 yard free. Piper finished third in the event behind Jessica Foschi of Stanford and Brooke Townsend of ASU.
Junior Sarah McCauley (Tualatin, Ore.) and junior Jenny Lyman (Englewood, Colo.) earned NCAA consideration times in their respective events. McCauley took sixth in the 200 yard back (1:59.50) and Lyman finished sixth in the 100 yard free (:50.20).
In platform diving, senior Siobhan Kernan (Westmont, N.J.), sophomore K.C. Bunnell (Highland Village, Texas) and senior Megan Kernan (Westmont, N.J.) finished sixth, eighth and 13th respectively.
'I have utmost pride and respect for Siobhan, K.C., Megan, who dive tower competitively despite the fact that we do not have a facility to train this event properly,' head diving coach Lee-Jay Strifler said. 'They should all be commended for their efforts and maturity that will be needed at the Big Tens and NCAAs.'
The Wisconsin 400 yard free relay of Lyman, Emily Pisula (Freeport, Ill.), McCauley and Shannon Van Curen (Brentwood, Tenn.) finished second in a school record time of 3:20.40. Sunday's squad broke the school record of 3:20.50 set last year by Ellen Stonebraker, Lyman, Pisula and Jamie Belfor.
'It was a real good surprise,' said Hansen of the new 400 free mark.
Wisconsin has a month off from the competitive waters. The Badgers next compete at the Rainbow Classic, Jan. 2-3, 2002.
