Women's Swimmers Take Hold of Second at Minnesota Invite

The Wisconsin women's swimming team is in second place after Friday's first-day action at the Minnesota Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. With 295 team points, the Badgers are only 13 points shy of first-place Notre Dame. Ten teams are competing in the three-day invitational.
One diving event, two relays and three individual swimming events took place on Friday. One Badger finished first in her event, two UW relay teams took second and two other Badgers took second in their individual events to pace Bucky.
Frosh Carly Piper (Grosse Point, Mich.) continued to lead the Badgers in the distance freestyle events, winning the 500 free in 4:51.77. Piper topped her previous best of 4:56.03.
Second-place finishers include sophomore Emily Pisula (Freeport, Ill.) in the 200 IM (2:03.63) and junior Jenny Lyman (Englewood, Colo.) in the 50 free (23.56). Pisula and Lyman also assisted in runner-up finishes as members of two Wisco relay teams. Lyman, Bethany Pendleton (Hood River, Ore.), Shannon Van Curen (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Pisula combined to finish second in the 200 free relay (1:34.35). Sarah McCauley (Tualatin, Ore.), Pisula, Andrea Wanezek (Brookfield, Wis.) and Lyman touched second in the 400 medley relay (3:47.41).
Seniors Megan Kernan (Westmont, N.J.) and Siobhan Kernan (Westmont, N.J.) finished third and sixth, respectively, on the one-meter board to score diving points for the Badgers.
The Badgers continue second-day action at the Minnesota Invitational Saturday at noon.
