Badgers Shut Down Warriors 5-0
October 20, 2001 | Men's Hockey
The Wisconsin Badgers downed the Wayne State Warriors 5-0 Saturday night at the Kohl Center. The win marked the Badgers first shut-out of the new season, as well as a first career start and shut-out for freshman goalie Bernd Bruckler (Graz, Austria).
While Bruckler collected 25 saves for the win, Junior Brad Winchester led UW with two goals and one assist on the night and senior Matt Hussey pitched in three assists for the Badgers. Wisconsin seniors Matt Doman and Kent Davyduke, along with freshman Alex Leavitt, all added a goal a piece as the Badgers avenged Friday's season-opening loss to Wayne State.
Wisconsin took the early 3-0 lead in the first period after the Warriors failed to protect their net in a Badger dominated power play. Davyduke earned his short-handed goal in the second period, while Winchester collected his second goal in the third.
The Badgers next face 2001 NCAA runner up North Dakota on the road next weekend, Oct. 26 and 27. This series will be the first two of four scheduled games this season against the Fighting Sioux. The puck drops next Friday at 7:35 p.m.
