Women's Swimmers Surge Past Northern Illinois

The Wisconsin women's swimming and diving team opened its 2001-02 season with a dominating win over Northern Illinois, 175-52, Friday night at DeKalb, Ill. The Badgers took the top three spots in six different events and captured the top spot in 12 events out of 13 events.
'I'm extremely happy with the way we competed, ' coach Eric Hansen said. 'Our freshmen really stepped forward, proving that they'll be impact swimmers.'
Carly Piper (Grosse Pointe, Mich) led the Badger rookies with victories in the 500 and 1000-yard freestyle events. Piper tallied an individual 18 points for UW as one of two Badgers to come away with two first-place finishes. The other multiple winner was Jenny Lyman (Englewood, Colo.), who finished first in the 50 and 100 free.
Freshman Shannon Van Curen (Brentwood, Tenn.) also stepped forward for the Badgers, tallying second-place finishes in the 200 and 500 free.
Seven other Badgers grabbed the top spot in their respective events, including sophomore Emily Pisula (Freeport, Ill.) in the 200 breast, co-captain Andrea Wanezek (Brookfield, Wis.) in the 200 fly and junior Sarah McCauley (Tualatin, Ore.) in the 200 free.
Bucky also dominated in the relay events, taking first and second in the 400-yard medley relay to open the meet.
Wisconsin will take a week off before returning to competition. In their home opener and first of only three home events this year, the Badgers will face Iowa on Oct. 26-27 at the UW Natatorium.
